Started Mini Bonsai

Using pots I bought in April, I started Mini-Bonsai.

I dug up seedlings from our backyard, cleaned the soil off, and planted them into mini pots.

  • Cutting off the top and picking leaves encourages branching.
  • Trim roots to fit into a pot.  Sometimes it is less damaging to the plant to just bend the large main root instead of cutting them.
  • The height should be about 1/3 of desired final height.
  • It is very important to have soil with good drainage.

The left one is Privet and the right is Red Maple. I have no idea if they will make good Bonsai or not, I just chose them because they sprout abundantly all over the yard and grow pretty quickly.  They must be strong plants to thrive in the hard and dry Georgia red clay.

We'll see how they will do as Bonsai.
